His Royal Highness The Duke of Gloucester has formally opened the Duke’s Building at the ºÚÁÏÍø, a major new facility for health, wellbeing and sport education, named in honour of the University’s Chancellor.
His Royal Highness unveiled a commemorative plaque and met staff, students, governors and Fellows of the University. The event was attended by many senior health leaders from across Worcestershire, alongside local dignitaries including the Leader of Worcester City Council, who is a former hospital and NHS pharmacist, and the Mayor of Worcester.
The Duke’s Building represents a significant new chapter in the University’s continued investment in outstanding learning environments and places the University among those with some of the very best facilities for health education in the UK. Purpose-built to encourage innovation, collaboration and interdisciplinary learning, the building reflects the University’s strong commitment to academic excellence, community engagement and sustainable development.
The three-storey, flexible teaching space supports students from across a wide range of health and wellbeing disciplines, including nursing, medicine, paramedic science, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, physician associate studies, sport and exercise science and related professions. Students learn and train together in multi-professional teams, reflecting the collaborative way modern healthcare is delivered and preparing graduates to work effectively across professional boundaries.
The building includes state-of-the-art clinical skills suites, modern teaching and learning spaces, and specialist sport and exercise science laboratories. These facilities provide students with hands-on, real-world learning opportunities in an inspiring, technologically advanced environment, enabling them to develop both technical expertise and team-based professional skills.
HRH displayed a keen interest throughout the visit, particularly in the innovative nature of the building and its role in supporting health education and research. As a trained professional architect, HRH was interested to hear about the building’s design, function, form and practical operation.
Professor David Green CBE DL, Vice Chancellor and Chief Executive of the ºÚÁÏÍø, said:
“The opening of the Duke’s Building is a significant milestone in the continued development of our Severn Campus. It will be invaluable in preparing the next generation of nurses, doctors and allied health professionals with the practical skills, collaborative experience and confidence they need to make a real difference in healthcare and wellbeing.”
Professor Green added: “We were delighted to welcome His Royal Highness The Duke of Gloucester to formally open the building named in his honour. The Duke’s longstanding interest in innovation, health and education, combined with his professional expertise in architecture, makes his association with the University especially meaningful. Naming this building after him recognises that enduring and valued relationship.”
He continued: “The Severn Campus is already home to the Elizabeth Casson Building, where our Paramedic Science students learn life‑saving skills; the multi-award‑winning University Arena, a hub for grassroots, student and elite sport; and the Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Building, a major centre for medical and health education where an increasing number of students are training to become the doctors of the future, and the Riverside Building, a wonderful hub for educating physiotherapists and sports therapists. The Duke’s Building further strengthens this campus as a centre of excellence for health, wellbeing and sport education.”
